Retrofit: old systems with the latest technology

Modern industrial plants are exposed to great loads on a daily basis. At the same time, the electrical and automation systems are often required to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Another challenge is that the cycle of innovations in the field of automation and IT is much faster than in the field of mechanics, making the modernization of complex control systems an ever-present challenge.

Optimization without a completely new circuit

According to the German Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health, the material requirements for machines and systems apply to both old and new machines. Thus, the operator of a machine or plant is obliged to comply with the applicable health and safety rules. This often involves the need to put the complete electrical and automation systems to the test. At Leadec, we take on various tasks during retrofitting: The main focus of our work is the replacement of hardware such as sensors and the modification of electrical installations and control cabinets.

We at Leadec have a lot of experience with detailed planning and preparation of retrofit measures in short shutdown windows or even during operation. We support you in the hazard assessment, implement the latest requirements of functional safety and always have the goal of also creating additional benefits with a retrofit of your sensors, actuators, control technology and visualization that justify the replacement investment.

Save time and costs thanks to retrofit

The basic substance of your electrical system remains in place and is renewed at the necessary points. In many industrial plants, robots have a service life of around three to seven years. During this time, the robots and thus the electrical system have to be optimized again and again. We are happy to support you in this and expand your system accordingly.

Our goal is to avoid expensive and unnecessary production downtime. After being overhauled by our experts, the plant is once again up to the latest electrical standards, which not only increases plant availability, but also reduces troubleshooting time and ensures greater safety. All applicable rules, standards and laws are thus also adhered to.

FAQ

What does retrofit mean?

The term is made up of the Latin word "retro" meaning backwards and the English word "fit" meaning "to adapt." Retrofit is a way of bringing a company up to scratch. In this sense, older or technically obsolete machines are not disposed of or replaced, but brought up to date in the form of plant modernization in order to remain operational.

What are the advantages of retrofitting?

Since only individual components are replaced, expanded or modified in a retrofit, while the machine itself remains the same, it is efficiently renewed only at the necessary points. In this way, expensive and unnecessary production downtimes can be avoided and the plant is once again up to the latest electrical standards after the overhaul. This not only increases plant availability, but also reduces troubleshooting time and ensures greater safety.

Is retrofitting always possible?

In principle, retrofitting is almost always possible. Depending on the machine type and condition, modernization takes more or less time and money. Among other things, retrofits are offered directly by machine manufacturers who have recognized the potential of this measure. In addition, numerous companies take care of plant modernization independently of manufacturers. However, the cost-benefit factor should always be weighed up individually.

Retrofit and the future?

The standard of the future is moving steadily toward networked production. In this respect, retrofit represents an interesting opportunity to lead a company step by step in the direction of Industry 4.0 and thus to lay the foundations for a successful future.
